Wow - an STM, SM and SE all got the boot because they couldnt sell and had to lie. The funny part was that they told ME i couldn't sell and tried to end my sales career before it even started. how pathetic. the one at the top had to lie again to save face and God knows where she is. the other two had go move on to some two bit payroll company.
i hope the model has changed at this place. since adp is often considered a training ground for other endeavors, let's hope that the gigo theory has changed. there are a lot of good companies that have had to suffer by taking on the loose teeth of this place.

Here is the truth about ADP and similar B2B companies:
They will hire you right out of college with minimal or no sales experience. Bust your ass and hit your quota. Immediately after your first full year and your first quota attainment, begin looking for a company you can make a career out of. ADP is excellent experience for medical device and pharma sales, all which pay much more money and give you all expenses paid. ADP was a great company to work for, but now ADP is nothing more than a stepping stone to a real job.

I have heard it said that most medical device cos are the same way. Once you hit your quota they jack it out of site and you almost never hit it again. At least not any time soon.
What companies out there are reasonable about increasing quotas once you hit goal?

Dude I hate to break it to you but that is how it is EVERYWHERE. Sales in banking, payroll, industrial, medical, pharma....it doesn't matter it is all the same. Blow out your numbers one year and you will be sorry because they jack it up from there. Get used to it or get out of sales. Hate to say it, but it's true. Any company anywhere is going to look for the best way to fuck you out of making bank.

Nah, not all companies are like that. ADP definitely is though.

Buddy - I was at ADP a few years ago - the company is like graduate school for sales - you go in- get your rear kicked for 2 years and then get out. That is the gig - if you stay longer and do well.. good for you but that is not the norm. ADP will always be that way becuase that is the culture they created...

ADP is nothing more than sales school for the big pharma and medical companies.
Congrats on everyone who has successfully made the transition.

Right on the money!!!
Did ADP in the late 90's. Broke my hump for 2 years, and went straight to Medical Sales. Not to repeat what has already been said, but these Med companies love the ADP/Copier/B2B sales people.

Been at ADP 2.5 years, probably was 1.5 too long. Now getting lots of great interviews -- and not just medical ones. Make the most of the training, work hard, get a good manager/territory and you'll do well. Good Side: ADP invests a lot in R&D -- Products are TOTALLY best in the industry, especially with the new RUN products (we have been selling them 4 months and there is nothing cometitive out there) so having the best product cometitively priced is great. Bottom line: ADP is a great stepping stone to get into sales.

I'm about to say my piece only b/c those that want to get into sales should know the truth about ADP. I'm half disgruntled, and half appreciative for my experience at ADP.
The good:
Adp is a great starting point into sales. Especially SBS. Good place to make some friends and party, but does get a little 'high school' after a while. You will learn sales skills, but avoid getting brain washed. Hone your skills/style for your next move. You will learn how to develop thick skin. You will learn to deal with all types of personalities. Customers will hate you as a sales person, some may give you 5 minutes just out of respect, but no one is going to say wow, that ADP rep is the best. You will deal with Cust. srvce issues non-stop. You will learn how to build networking relationships, and how quickly they can be destroyed. You will learn that one week, you are the best rep ever, just to get buried by the same mgr because you didn't sell enough the following week. You WILL learn how it feels to be micro-managed, and decide if its for you.
The Bad:
Service issues across the board with SBS. No definitive rules on sales made within your territory by another rep. Managers tend to side with the rep that they favor. It's HIGHLY political, no matter which region. Politics is true wherever you go, but don't get sucked in. You are not there friend! Accountants don't care about you, bankers only want business from you, but no network buddy will reciprocate as much as you will for them. Managers will push you to make additional business sales to existing accounts to the point where its immoral. Who needs a report that will cost $10 per processing for a birthday report???
It's true about the quota's. Even if you kicked ass the prior year, they will jack it up to get you out. It's the churn and burn theory, new blood is always hungrier than old. New blood will cold call more, foot more, network more until they realize the whole sales model is bull. Once reality hits, you will try to work 'smarter,' which will segway into laziness, then you are old blood. Oh yeah, six figures, just maybe if your territory has a history for it. Reality, you will make $55 - $70k for 65 hrs of work per week.
FYI - Brain washing... They will say Pharma sucks, or Med sales is awful. I'm making double, my quality of life is better, I work from a home office. I make my own schedule. I'm not micro managed. I've earned club with my company in my second year. Drs. do want to see me (better than cold calling or foot canvassing). Don't listen to that bull. They will make you think that you are managerial material. Although they may be right, you won't be a manager for them. Besides, would you want to baby sit 10 reps and micro-manage them only because your Sales Exec tells you so!!! I almost felt sorry for my 3rd Sales manager, but he was a prick anyways.
The ugly:
You are never friends with your Sales Manager(SM) or Sales Exec (SE)!!! You are a number. The guy that hired you will be turned over at least 3x. Then all political relations go out the door and you have to start over brown-nosing the next guy. The expense account is a complete joke!!! Don't even bother to buy donuts for an accountant unless your manager ponies the bill. They will ask "did you get a referral." I ask you, would you give a payroll rep a referral of one of your small biz clients just b/c they brought you a bavarian donut??? PLEASE
Oh yeah, that bold headed 5ft 3 prick that thinks he's mafioso, if your SE reports to him, refuse the interview and try Paychex. If ur a chick, don't bother with the bj's, it won't work. That guy is simply a cold-hearted asshole that couldn't care less but himself. He must have pic's of someone from corporate, he's just an idiot!
Overall:
I made enough money to buy my own place. Earned enough experience to warrant a Med-sales job that pays me more than double. I was able to last because I had a couple of hot accountants, but the well ran dry after I signed all their clients. I worked there for 5 years, made multiple trips and incentives, won awards. Take it from me, hit quota for one year, better if you make club, then RUN!!! Btw, if you must take the job, find out the territory, if you are just there till something opens up, don't bother. Try copier sales, or entry-pharma/dental sales. Sonicare, Colgate, or even UPS/FEDEX shipping sales, Enterprise/Hertz. All these companies will give you just as good training.
Good luck!!!

Yes, it really is. Scary how accurate. Just and FYI Paychex is the same way. I've done both. Big mistake. I waited too long(4 years) to look for a med/pharma job. Seriously RUN after no more that 2.5 years. Don't wait because the job gets easy. Move on no matter what.

You guys must all be green, first job SBS guys.
I'm in NAS, have made three bucks a year for the last four years running, talk to my manager once a week, have the time of my life.
For those paying attention, talk to folks that are still employed here....not those who are long gone because they couldn't cut it.

Easy cowboy, I posted "My ADP Years". Made club multiple times, won multiple awards, seen tons of good people go due to management inabilities in SBS within the North East to foster talent, grow, and maintain them. I don't have enough fingers and toes to count the multi prez club winners that were pushed out. It a sad situation. ADP is good for the experience to jump to greener pastures. Don't fool anyone with your ignorance!
