Hi guys and gals! I'm hoping some of you can clear some things up for me. I am interviewing for a Major Account rep position and have to take the personality profile. I have a very dominant, assertive, type A personality, embraces change, loves new challenges, big time people person. Will my attributes match up for this role's personality type, pr should I even not bother? I know that ADP is very specific in their selection. Also, if I fail the assessment but am interested in another division, say Totalsource, do I have to take it again? Or will my original one be used? Any help will be much appreciated!!!

It has been a while since I worked at ADP, but you should do fine. You sound like the type they look for. No need to try to game the assessment.

I am not sure if another test will be required for another division.

I was contacted by a recruiter for TotalSource for a DM position. Very qualified, impressive resume, and rocked the phone interview. She sent me the online assessment and I answered it in the same manner you described yourself - type a, assertive, people person. I was sent an email that I didn't pass, my profile was not a match. I'm not sure what Major Accounts is looking for, but TotalSource isn't looking for the strong sales types.

I think I remember your assessment. When you answered the question, "What would you do if you couldn't become a part of TotalSource" with "Become a serial killer", that pretty much disqualified you. Otherwise you would have been in.

Just kidding. Who knows what they are looking for with these assessments.

True that. In my days with ADP, I've seen total morons hired on as Major Account DMs (reps), and stellar qualified candidates passed up. I referred 3 who tried getting into Major Accts and Totalsource: one from pharma, and 2 from Xerox. All 3 were screened out by the online assessment. The pharma rep then signed on with a major medical device company, and the Xerox reps - one became a capital equipment sales rep, and the other a sales manager for a medical disposable company. All 3 at the top in their divisions making close to $200K each. Meanwhile, we had the lazy morons at Majors either not lasting 6 months, or being put on a PIP in less than a year. Once in a blue moon we get a good one, but for the most part lots of bumbling idiots. Perhaps it has a lot to do with SBS transfers and good ol' boy hand me downs.

One issue with these assessments is how they are analyzed. Sometimes that have someone trained at the company to score them, sometimes they send them off to be analyzed. And again you never know who is doing the analysis. It could be a psychologist, a trained tech, etc.

Wow, it's sad that even before meeting face to face with the actual hiring manager, the fate of a candidate is in the hands of some random person analyzing a sheet of paper! What happened to the "human" part of human resources?! Lots of companies are going this route because it might save them money in the long run. They don't realize that they are also missing out on many potentially great candidates.
